Who is SKM and what do you know about assisted living?
We’ve been in the electrical trade for more than 15 years and have been installing Smart Home technology for many customers – Assisted Living is an extension of this, which began with a family member needing it. From that, we discovered more and more about what technology is available and what it can do for people to help them, preserve their independence but also give them peace of mind that help is nearby should they need it.
What is Loxone?
A brand of electrical devices which are installed around a home to make it interactive. We have researched and used many brands but Loxone is our preferred one, for its capabilities and reliability.
How do I know what technology I need?
We’ll arrange to speak with you and visit you at home to see your home, find out how you live, what you’d like to be made easier and also to understand your mobility and abilities – to ensure the design we suggest works for you.
What is Assisted Living?
Technology that helps you to live more easily in your home. It’s small pieces of electrical kit that work together to make life more comfortable and convenient, like lights that come on when you open the front door and it’s dark, or audio reminders that come through a speaker, programmed at different times – to remember to take medication, for example.
What can Assisted Living help me with?
Many things! Door contacts mean you can open your front door without going to it, lighting and heating can be automated, alerts set if you leave a window open, emergency contacts set up so that if you need them, they are called. Our fall detector sensors work on movement – if your usual movements haven’t happened, such as getting up to go to bed, it will alert someone to check you are OK.
How do you make my home an Assisted Living one?
By adding the technology around your home, replacing what you have using Smart devices, such as speakers and lighting, connected with a wireless system, so no wires to connect up or try to hide!
Is it easy to adapt my home to Assisted Living?
Yes – we will talk you through all that needs to happen, along with the costs involved for set-up and ongoing if applicable.
Is Assisted Living reliable?
The technology is run from a Miniserver that’s powered by your home’s main electrical supply. To maintain continuous operation even during power outages, it can be connected to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). This backup solution ensures that the Miniserver, and by extension, the entire Smart Living system, remains functional during power disruptions, so will work as you expect it to.
Is Assisted Living hard to use?
No – we will show you everything you need to know, so that before we leave, you are confident in what it does and how it works for you and others who might be involved.
How long does it take to add Assisted Living to my home?
Our installation team will plan the work and let you know in advance, how long it will take, It will all depend on how large your set-up is, so could take a few hours or be carried out across multiple days at your convenience.
Do I have to move out when the technology is added?
No – we can work around you, trying to be as considerate as possible. An installation plan will be discussed in advance so that we know when we can work and when we need to allow you time for your care, if you have it.
Do I need to be home when the technology is added?
We need you there to set it up if we are using voice commands and also to test it, to check it is doing what you need it to.
Who fits the Smart Home devices?
Our installation team – all of which are qualified, registered, certified and insured…plus they are all very nice people too!
What training do I get so I know how to use the new technology?
We’ll show you the buttons, what happens, how to turn it on, off, make changes and ensure that before we leave, you are confident.
How does Assisted Living make my home more energy efficient?
It can help with efficiency by turning on your lighting, heating or water, only when you need them. It can also save energy for you by alerting you to an open door or window if the heating is on at the same time – in case you weren’t aware it’s open and want to close it.
How does Assisted Living automate my home?
You can have lights on coming on automatically, set to the illumination level you want, music turned on at a particular time (even a particular song!), heating that comes on when it’s told to, water that shuts off if a leak is detected etc.
Can I have a trial to see if Assisted Living is right for me?
We can’t give you a trial, but we can bring some of the technology to show you and give a demonstration with. We’ll always ask what you might need, then talk you through the Assisted Living technology that matches you, letting you know how it works and answering any questions for you.
What if I need to change my technology – add or remove something?
Just let us know and we can come to make any additions or adjustments. The technology is designed to be flexible.
What happens if something isn’t working?
In your training, we will give you some advice to solve easy things, but just get in touch if you can’t get something to work – and we can help to fix it asap for you.
We offer aftercare service plans – annual servicing which means your system will have a regular check to keep it in top working order, or upgrades applied.
We can fix most issues remotely, which offers convenience, as you won’t need to let someone in or even make a cuppa!
I can’t see very well – how does Assisted Living help me?
Lights can be programmed to be on when the front door is open so it’s light when you get in – and you don’t have to find the light switches, lighting can be fitted to illuminate walkways to help you navigate, control buttons can be larger and speakers can talk to you letting you know what controls are being run, or to confirm what you are asking it to do…just in case you’ve pressed the wrong button. We have many features to help when sight is reduced.
I can’t hear very well – how does Assisted Living help me?
Smart Living has a range of features for those with hearing loss, including visual clues, such as lights dimming, flashing or brightening when someone rings the doorbell. If you can’t hear it very well, the lighting will make sure you know someone is there so you don’t miss your visitors.
I live alone – how can Assisted Living help me to feel safer?
Door contacts can sound to let you know when any doors or windows are open, you could have a keypad instead of a front door key that might be lost, lighting can come on before it gets dark or before you get home, alerts can let people know if you might need help, so you will feel independent but with safety nearby should you need it.
I have mobility issues – how does Assisted Living assist me?
Many of the features of Assisted Living make things easier if getting around is becoming harder, or less safe for you. You can have many features on a handheld control panel, so you can open the front door, turn lights and heating on and off, play music, listen to an audiobook, change channel on the TV etc, without having to move around.
What if there’s a power cut?
The back-up system will kick in to keep your Smart Living kit operational.
